Arthur Joseph Ness



Mr. Arthur Joseph “Pa” Ness of Todd, NC passed away on April 18, 2018 after many years of declining health from Parkinson’s disease. He was born May 17, 1933 in Denmark, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Ness and Raye Levy Ness. He was married to Kay Frances Morris Ness of Denmark, SC for 57 years. He is survived by his wife; a daughter Suzanne Ness Willson (husband Hal); 2 grandsons Arthur Ness Willson and Matthew McCoy Willson, all of Greenville, SC; also a brother Harold Ness of Denmark, SC and a sister Rita Solomon of Charleston, SC. Also, preceded in death by a brother Julius “Bubba” Ness of Bamberg, SC and sister Sylvia Rosenwasser of Alexandria, VA.

Mr. Ness graduated from Denmark High School, The University of SC, and received a Master of Business Degree from the University of SC in 1961. He was in banking for 33 years and retired from Wachovia Mortgage Investment Co. as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in 1997; and moved to his mountain home in Todd, NC. He was also Sr. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for August Kohn Mortgage Co. (1st National Bank in SC) and Chief Financial Officer and VP of South Carolina National Bank’s Mortgage Co. He received the first President’s Award from Mortgage Bankers of the Carolinas in 1987 and was recognized by the SC Legislature for his outstanding service to the banking industry. He also served on the Board of Directors of Mortgage Bankers of the Carolinas for many years and continued to serve for approximately 10 years after retirement.

He was a Captain in the US Army and served for 11 years in the US and in Europe. “Art” volunteered in the community serving several years as treasurer for the Todd Ruritan Club and Todd Community Preservation Organization. He also volunteered many hours auditing small churches in Ashe County. He was a member of the Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Columbia, SC where he was an ordained deacon, and also an Associate Member of South Fork Baptist Church in Todd, NC. He also participated regularly in the Parkinson’s Support Group of the High Country, and loved Boxing for Parkinson’s.

Art loved God, his country, family, and friends; and all who met him loved him. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Denmark, SC on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 2:00 PM and family will receive friends at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary prior to the service on Saturday. Interment will be in the Denmark Cemetery immediately following the service with military honors accorded.

The family will have a memorial service at 11 AM, Saturday, April 28th at South Fork Baptist Church in Todd, NC; visitation and a luncheon will follow the memorial service on Saturday, April 28th in the fellowship hall.
