Obituary

Walter Eugene "Pete" Brooker, Sr., widower of Mildred Zeigler "Sis" Brooker died peacefully at his home in Denmark, SC on March 29, 2018. Pete was happily married to the love of his life, Sis, for 49 years. Mr. Pete was 98.

Mr. Pete was born on June 21, 1919 in Denmark, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Eugene Elijah Brooker and Elizabeth Hutto Brooker. Mr. Pete was a graduate of Denmark High School and Presbyterian College.

Mr. Pete was a lifelong resident of Denmark, except for the time spent overseas during World War II. He served in the US Army Infantry in World War II. He saw combat duty in Africa and Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel of the Bamberg County National Guard unit of which he was a founding member.

Mr. Pete served as Mayor of Denmark from 1957 - 1978. He then became a Commissioner with the South Carolina Department of Transportation for two successive terms. He ran his family business, Brooker's, in Denmark, alongside his daughter, Paula, and impressively still worked six days a week up until his recent illness.

Mr. Pete served on numerous boards over the years including Epworth Children’s Home, the Denmark Technical College Area Commission, the South Carolina Higher Education Commission and the Southern Carolina Regional Development Board. He was awarded the Economic Development Ambassador designation for Bamberg County by Gov. Mark Sanford. He has served on countless committees and is an active member of the Denmark Lions Club.

In 2009, Mr. Pete received the prestigious South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, where he gave tribute to his dear mother for being the earliest and most important influence in his life.

Mr. Pete was always admired for being the utmost southern gentleman. He often turned heads with his distinguished dapper attire (never looking his age)! He loved people and always made you smile! Most notably, Mr. Pete will forever be remembered for selflessly giving himself to his family, his country, his hometown of Denmark, his state and his faith, in total commitment, dedication, and loyalty.

Surviving are his two children: Walter Eugene Brooker, Jr., (predeceased by his wife Niki G. Brooker), and Paula Brooker Guess. Two grandchildren: Connor Daniel Guess and Paul Brooker Guess, a nephew, Gene Williams (Linda) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and many loving cousins.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Julia Hunter and Ralph Dickerson for their dedicated loving care and support during his home health care, as well as Grove Park Hospice of Orangeburg.
