Grover William "Bill" Rhodus



Grover W. “Bill” Rhodus, 90, passed away quietly in the early morning hours on Thursday, March 15, 2018, after a long and courageous fight with Lewy Body disease, a form of dementia. Bill was born August 22, 1927 to the late Connor and Lelia Rhodus of Kershaw, S.C. and grew up in Camden, S.C. where he attended the local school system. He later met his future wife, Loretta “Rita” Brinson, at a party in her hometown of Winnsboro, SC. They married March 17, 1950 and made their home in the quiet little town of Williston, SC where they raised their four children and remained in Williston for 50 years, then moving to Oakleaf Village Assisted Living in Lexington, SC. He was a devout Christian and a member of the First Baptist of Williston, SC where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School for 24 years, was the Training Union director and also sang in the choir for 40 years. He retired from E.I. DuPont in Aiken, SC as a supervisor of the E & I Department after 33 years of service. Bill was a proud veteran who served his country during World War II. His service spanned 4 years, 1944 to 1948. He then became a member of the Army National Guard from 1951 to 1954, attaining the rank of sergeant. He greatly appreciated the opportunity to participate in the SC Veterans’ Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He enjoyed his workshop and morning visits to Hardee‘s Restaurant for coffee and biscuits with his friends for Prayer Breakfast. He was a long time member of the Gideon’s and a member of the Lions Club for 40 years where he held nearly all offices and was elected Lion of the Year for 3 years. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all. He was a man who never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Loretta “Rita” Rhodus of Oakleaf Village, Lexington, SC, children Billy Rhodus (Pat) of Barnwell, SC, Susan Derrick (Stan) of Irmo, SC, Mike Rhodus (Debbie) of Hickory, NC, and Cindy Bell (Mark) of Suwanee, Ga. Grandchildren Cristi Kemp (Jerry) of York, SC, Heather McCormack (Clif) of Prosperity, SC, David Rhodus of Chicago, Il., Daniel Rhodus (Jenny) of Holly Springs , NC, Julie Bell of Duluth, Ga., and Katie Fleurin of Goch, Germany. Great grandchildren, Sheaffer, Ivy and Zac McCormack, and Connor Rhodus. Also, Brother in Law Jimmy Mayer and Sister in Law Betty Rhodus, both of Camden SC. In addition to both parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother Sonny Rhodus and sisters Sara Mayer, Margaret Canter and Mary Loden.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 13030 Main Street in Williston, SC on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be held at the Williston Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to either the First Baptist Church of Williston, P.O. Box 366, Williston, SC 29853 or the Gideon’s International Barnwell Camp, P.O. Box 86, Williston, SC 29853.

The family would like to thank Oakleaf Village Assisted Care and to Lighthouse Hospice for their love and caring. Also a big thank you to all the workers at Oakleaf, who gave Bill so much love. A memorial will be held at a later date at Oakleaf Village to honor Bill. A sincere thanks and debt of gratitude to their multitude of friends in Williston over the years for being so dedicated.
